The creation of the art gallery
The art gallery is located in a 16th and 17th century palace built for the Jesuits on the former monastery of Santa María di Brera Humiliati. There the monks created a complete cultural center, founding a prestigious school, a library and an astronomical observatory.
In 1773 the Jesuit order was abolished and the Empress Maria Teresa of Austria founded the Accademia di Belle Arti there. In 1882 the art gallery became independent from the Accademia and since then its collection has not stopped expanding.
Exhibitions
The works are arranged chronologically and grouped according to the school to which they belong throughout the 38 rooms of the museum.
Among the most outstanding works are the "Finding of the Body of Saint Mark" by Tintoretto, "The Kiss" by Francesco Hayez, "Wedding of the Virgin" by Rafael, the "Montefeltro Altarpiece" by Piero della Francesca and especially the "Lamentation on Cristo Muerto "by Mantegna, a work studied by doctors, mathematicians and artists for centuries.
Although the Pinacoteca di Brera is considered one of the most important museums in the world, you can take a minibus in Milan by 8Rental for a ride and it has an extensive collection, having a mainly religious theme, we believe that the cost of admission is not justifies for the general public.
The part that does seem essential to us is the interior courtyard of the building, since it is the most impressive part of it and it is possible to access it for free.
